Seminary Program

This is where we post the essays from many of our Universal Life Church Seminary students. When students finish a ULC course, they write a comprehensive essay about their experiences with the course, what they learned, didn't learn, were inspired by, etc. Here are their essays.

Universal Life Church

Universal Life Church
Nag Hammadi Codex

Warm Greetings, All,

And to Reverend Rob, I have not yet discovered any specific information in the extrabiblical writings in the Nag Hammadi Codex that make specific reference to the activities of Jesus between the ages of 12 and 30. If the texts are to believed, He clearly did engage in some serious study of metaphysics and, undoubtedly, the cultivation of mystical experience during that time period.

I find some of the works difficult going. When I became a serious student of the Bible, I found abundant opportunities to take courses and read books that provided lots of background information, clarification of some of the linguistic issues, and various historical interpretations of the texts that made my understanding the Bible so much easier. With respect to the extrabiblical texts, there is no such wealth of support. I think that more Christians should engage in serious study of these materials, so that if these writings are consistent with the conventional Christian views, we can be provided with that viewpoint, or if the texts seriously contradict conventional Christian views, we can make an informed decision as to whether to take these works as seriously as the scriptures we are already familiar with.

What is clear about these writings is that they were the product of some of the earliest Christians, and therefore ignoring them is like ignoring the Declaration of Independence because it did not become part of the Constitution. In fact, I think the Declaration gives us a much clearer picture of the mind of the Founding Fathers than does the Constitution per se, although the Constitution, being the basis for public intercourse in American society, needs to be known and understood by every American citizen.

In Unity,
